Chip in to stop the sale of Canterbury's water

$2,235.00 raised
GOAL: $2,000.00

The Ashburton District Council is hell-bent on selling the rights to extract 45 litres of Canterbury water a second to a mysterious and newly-formed corporation called "NZ Pure Blue". [1]

But the Council wasn't counting on us. Almost 40,000 of us have joined in solidarity with thousands of locals who are strongly opposed to the deal.

And for good reason. The deal gives the corporation a free pass to drain 40 billion litres of water from their aquifers over the next 30 years -- and if the corporation drains the aquifer dry, the deal requires ratepayers to fill it up by draining the Ashburton River. A river that regularly runs dry. [2, 3]

We know that the pressure is getting to the Mayor and his councillors, so we're going to ramp it up. I’ve just spoken to councillor Ken Cutforth and he’s told me that he’s happy to receive our petition and table it with the Ashburton District Council at their next meeting at the end of the month. With your help, we'll make sure this petition handover makes a media splash, and delivers a message that the Council cannot ignore.

Can you chip in so we can deliver your signatures to the Ashburton District Council, stop this sale, and protect our water for future generations?

Your donations will help cover soundsystem hire, signage, t-shirts, a photographer and transport costs to and from the event. If we can raise a little extra we also plan to make a contribution to local group Bung the Bore on behalf of ActionStation members. [4]

Can you chip in so we can deliver your signatures to the Ashburton District Council with impact?

Where does ActionStation get its money from?

ActionStation is independent and member led - we don't accept money from government, political parties or big business.

We rely on donations from our members to make our campaigns happen. From time to time we’ll ask our members to fund a specific campaign or a specific action (e.g. to pay for the costs of an advertisement or billboard). All donations generated by these are used for that specific project. If for any reason we are unable to spend the money on the action for which it was raised we give our members the option to get a refund, or to choose how they would like to have the money used instead.

Since launching in 2014, we have also received some money from charitable trusts and foundations. The bulk of our start up funding came from Global Green Grants.

We are a very lean organisation. Our staff team is small, with one sole purpose - to build and run winning campaigns on issues our members care about. Our operating budget is funded entirely by small donations from members.
